The 2A Greater Saint Helens athletic league that Washougal Schools are part of has made the difficult decision to postpone the fall athletic season in order to ensure participant, spectator, and staff safety. This decision was made in consultation with local health officials, the WIAA state athletic organization, and school leadership, in recognition of the increase in COVID-19 cases in our community.
Keeping our student athletes and our communities safe is at the heart of this decision. Coaches and league leadership weighed the many benefits of athletic participation against the risks involved for everyone participating, and feel strongly that this is the best decision that could be made for our students.
This postponement will impact high school cross country, slow pitch softball, golf and tennis, as well as middle school football and volleyball. The league is working to reschedule these sports into the spring 2021 season, and will update the season calendar and schedules later in the fall once details are worked out. Any student who has already paid for participation in a fall sport will be automatically refunded their sports fee.
All of us play a part in making it safe for our students to participate in athletics. We can beat COVID-19 if we all wash our hands, wear a mask, and watch our distance. We got this, Washougal!
