Communication Between School and Home

Each year, all schools in the Washougal School District develop a School Improvement Plan.  Our job is to analyze all areas of our school and develop strategies to improve these areas. One of the areas that staff at Cape Horn-Skye Elementary is continually working on is the communication between school and home. We realize how important it is that our parents and community members are aware of what is happening at their school.

There are several ways we communicate with you. One is through our school newsletter. We send this out every week, usually on Tuesday, although sometimes it goes out on Wednesday. It contains information from Boosters, upcoming events and how you can be involved.

We also use our reader board, which is updated weekly by our custodian, John Miller. There is a limited space on the reader board; therefore, we must keep it short and simple, advertising events that are coming up shortly.

This year, we are making a concerted effort to utilize our website as a way to communicate to our community. While we have always had a website, we have relied more on our newsletter to get the work out. Our website is a work in progress. Starting from the ground, up, it requires a great deal of time to make it “picture perfect”.

On our website, you can find a list of each of our events past, present and future, with pictures of our families. Check this out. You will probably find your family among the smiling faces. You can also find the newsletter on the website. We have many families that would prefer to read it online, then read the hard copy.

This year, we have already had numerous events.  A few of these are: Back to School Night, Curriculum Night, monthly Super Citizen’s assemblies, CH-S 50th birthday party, Family Math Night and the Halloween Parade. If we didn’t use several methods of communicating with you, you may have missed them. Our goal is for you to have several ways to access information from our school so you never miss an event.

We want to encourage our families to read our newsletters together. Beginning this week, we will have three questions about information in this newsletter. You will find these questions at the very end of each newsletter. After reading the newsletter and answering the questions, your student can bring the signed form to the office to be put in a prize drawing that will be held at the next Super Citizen’s Assembly.  Happy Reading!
