Students in Washougal High School’s Metals class are creating custom wind chimes that showcase their welding, measuring, and collaboration skills. The project combines creativity with technical precision as students work together to design, cut, and assemble each piece into a finished product.

Metals is part of Washougal’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. CTE courses provide students with hands-on skill-building and career exploration opportunities in high school.

The Washington Employment Security Department projects nearly 13,000 job openings in construction and extraction occupations per year for the next five years. Through projects like this, students learn hands-on skills needed to become the welders, builders, and construction managers of the future.

In Washougal School District, CTE programs are guided by industry professionals who help to guide curriculum development to align with skills needed in the workforce. CTE Advisory Committee members meet with program teachers and district leaders to share current industry standards and help students gain relevant skills that are transferable to real-world careers.
