This week students at Jemtegaard Middle School (JMS) celebrated the Day of the Dead or Día de los Muertos, a holiday celebrated in Mexico and other Latin American countries, that honors those who have passed away. Students interested in participating created an ofrenda and painted skulls on faces to create traditional calavera (a skull that represents their ancestors who have passed away, and celebrates the beauty and necessity of death).
Jemtegaard Teacher Jason Foster said, “Día de los Muertos is not a scary celebration, rather it is a time to remember the lives of those who came before with decorations, music, parades, feasts, and sweets. Dozens of JMS students participated, making it one of our largest cultural celebrations.” Día de los Muertos is celebrated on November 1 and 2 each year.

The event was organized by the ASB Student Leadership, supported by staff, student and community volunteers.
