PRESCHOOL INSTRUCTOR (2 positions)
Cape Horn-Skye Elementary School
7 hours per day (7:30 am – 3:00 pm) All Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays (including conference/last days)
143 days per year (Student attendance days only)
(60 work days probation for new employees)
Rate of pay: $22.66 – $29.63
Purpose Statement:
To implement and provide a positive learning experience for children 3-5 years old addressing mental, physical, social and emotional development.
This job reports to Assistant Superintendent/Building Administrator
Essential Functions
- Plans, prepares and executes an enriching preschool and pre-K program for 3-5 year olds with structured and unstructured activities based on best practices.
- Knowledge of the learning, growth and developmental process for children and developmentally appropriate curriculum using an integrated approach of cognitive, physical, social and emotional modalities.
- Develops and incorporates curriculum based on the Washington State Early Learning Guidelines and district expectations.
- Teaches and promotes the practice of life skills (e.g. self-care, serve nutritional snack) and good habits for the purposes of improving the quality of student outcome and encouraging student development.
- Maintains a well-managed classroom with minimal direction and age-appropriate behavior model.
- Responsible for individual and groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of enforcing school rules and procedures and providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for the purpose of documentation and/or communicating information to appropriate personnel.
- Collects and compiles student data for evaluations and assessments.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Communicates effectively with parents, school staff and supervisor including responding to inquiries from staff (e.g. administrators, psychologists, teachers) for the purpose of information.
- Coordinates and facilitates Parent-Teacher Conferences twice annually.
- Schedules and facilitates WA Kids Conferences for new families.
- Collaborates with kindergarten teachers through Professional Learning Communities (PLC) as scheduled.
- Collaborates with Special Services in the implementation of the inclusion preschool model for identified students as needed.
- Performs recordkeeping and clerical functions (e.g. copying and collecting/distributing supplies).
- Maintains classroom materials and equipment, work area, (e.g. adapting instructional materials, cleaning work area, taking attendance, audio visual equipment, etc.)
- Has the ability to work with computers and related curriculum enhancing tools.
- Attends meetings and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions.
- Attends Professional Development workshops as assigned to assist with the incorporation of new strategies, techniques and curriculum.
- Attends monthly preschool PLC meetings as scheduled.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats and/or present information to others; and understand complex multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: concepts of grammar and punctuation; direct instruction/reading instruction; stages of child development and learning styles; and age appropriate activities.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. In working with others, problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; setting priorities; working as part of a team; and working with constant interruptions.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; frequent stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 50% sitting, 25% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions.
