We have a long standing tradition of honoring our veterans here at Canyon Creek. While we are not yet sure what Veteran’s Day will look like on campus this year, we hope to keep at least parts of our tradition alive. While CCMS does not sponsor the VFW’s Annual Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest, nor do we require participation, we do encourage students and value their effort.

The Washougal chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliary invite students in grades 6 through 8 to submit an original essay of 300-400 words on “What is Patriotism to Me?” All entries must be submitted no later than October 31st. Late entries will not be accepted. Entries may be submitted either directly to the VFW (address on the application) or to the school. This contest is nationwide, open to all students who are US citizens or legal residents, grades 6-8, even homeschoolers. The national grand prize for Patriot’s Pen is $5000. Please see the attached file for official rules and entry form.

*All submitted essays become the property of VFW and will not be returned to applicants. Please be sure to keep a copy for yourself should you wish to retain one. Copies will not be provided by VFW. This contest is not sponsored by WSD or CCMS, but is distributed by the school as a courtesy.
